The Engagement Machine
The algorithm doesn't show you what's best. It shows you what keeps you watching.
The Engagement Machine
Your feed feels personal. It seems to know you: your interests, your humor, your politics. But the algorithm behind it doesn't understand you at all. It understands one thing: what makes you stay.
How recommendation algorithms work
At a high level, it's simple. The algorithm tracks everything: what you click, how long you watch, what you skip, what makes you comment. Then it finds patterns: people who watched Video A for more than 30 seconds also watched Video B for 2 minutes. So it shows you Video B.
It's not curating for quality. It's not filtering for truth. It's optimizing for a single metric: time spent on the platform.
The algorithm is not designed to help you. It is designed to use you. — Jaron Lanier
The emotions that engage
Not all content is equal in the algorithm's eyes. Research consistently shows that certain emotions drive more engagement:
- Outrage makes people comment and share
- Anxiety keeps people scrolling for reassurance
- Envy drives comparison and return visits
- Fear is almost impossible to look away from
Happy, calm, nuanced content? It doesn't perform. It doesn't generate the emotional intensity that keeps thumbs moving. So the algorithm buries it.
Your feed is a mirror of your vulnerabilities
The content you see isn't a reflection of your interests. It's a map of your psychological weak points. If you engage with fitness content out of body insecurity, you'll get more content that triggers body insecurity. If political content makes you angry enough to comment, you'll get more political content designed to make you angry.
The algorithm doesn't care if you feel worse after using the app. It cares that you used the app for 47 minutes instead of 12.
Breaking the loop
- Reset your algorithm. Clear your watch history. Unlike everything. Start fresh and notice how quickly it learns your triggers again.
- Use the app with intention. Search for what you want instead of browsing what's served to you.
- Set a timer before you open any feed. Decide in advance how long you'll spend.
The engagement machine is very good at its job. Your only defense is knowing it exists.
